This IGEM policy brief outlines key policy asks for the new Labour government, urging support for a comprehensive energy system integration, biomethane growth, net zero workforce development and more.
Achieving net zero means reaching into the lives of everyone – those with, and those without. Those most vulnerable to change stand to suffer if we don’t get it right.

Response from the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero – Strategy and Policy Statement for Energy Policy in Great Britain: Consultation.
On the 30th March the UK Government published their Powering Up Britain package which contains a suite of new announcements to develop a thriving UK hydrogen economy.
IGEM responds to the Climate Change Committee which provides a series of recommendations for delivering a reliable, secure and decarbonised power system by 2035
Mission Zero – the published outcome of The Net Zero Review by Rt Hon Chris Skidmore MP – has made it clear that hydrogen will play a vital role in our future energy mix.
This report looks at hydrogen as a highly versatile energy vector that could be used in many hard-to-decarbonise sectors where other energy vectors, such as electricity, may not be suitable – for example, in
certain industrial direct-firing processes.
This paper provides insight in how hydrogen can meet the net zero target and its technical characteristics as part of an energy system designed to meet demand.
We welcome the opportunity to respond to this consultation and aim to represent the collective views of IGEM Members and our gas industry stakeholders. We have selected questions from the consultation which are of greatest relevance to our Members and provided our response.
Britain’s Hydrogen Blending Plan sets out the actions needed from industry and government to start decarbonising the gas network through hydrogen blending; demonstrating that a 20% hydrogen blend could reduce carbon emissions by 6m tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, equivalent to 2.5m cars being off the road.
