World’s largest hydrogen fuel-cell power plant to begin construction in South Korea
South Korea is set to lead the way in hydrogen innovation with the construction of the world’s largest hydrogen fuel-cell power plant, scheduled to begin in March 2025. Located in Gyeongsangbuk-do province, the 107.9MW facility represents a significant milestone in the transition to cleaner energy solutions.
At an estimated cost of $552.8m, the project has received substantial government backing. This development underscores South Korea’s commitment to advancing hydrogen technologies as part of its energy transition strategy. The facility will use unabated natural gas to produce the hydrogen required for its operations.
Once operational, the power plant is expected to contribute to meeting the region’s energy needs while fostering technological advancements in hydrogen fuel-cell systems. It also highlights the role of hydrogen as a critical component in achieving net zero targets.
As global interest in hydrogen continues to grow, projects like this demonstrate the potential of large-scale hydrogen solutions in bridging the gap between traditional energy sources and renewable alternatives.
