Ukraine’s gas grid welcomes first biomethane supply
For the first time, Ukraine has successfully supplied biomethane to its gas transmission system.
The VITAGRO group of companies, working in collaboration with Gas Distribution Networks of Ukraine LLC, achieved this milestone marking a breakthrough for the country’s energy sector.
The plant, currently operating at 60-70% of its planned capacity, is supplying around 6,000 cubic metres of biomethane daily to the gas distribution networks. Full capacity is expected by the end of October 2024.
The VITAGRO group is also preparing for biomethane exports, with all necessary permits in place. Once sufficient volumes have been accumulated in gas storage, the company will begin selling biomethane to international buyers.
Volodymyr Ivakhiv, VITAGRO's head of renewable energy, highlighted the significance of the project: "If the process goes as planned, we expect to export our first volumes of biomethane by November. This is a major step towards aligning the Ukrainian and European biomethane markets, similar to our progress with the electricity market."
