Three year extension of boiler upgrade scheme
The government has announced a three-year extension of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), aimed at assisting households and small non-domestic property owners in England and Wales.
The initiative encourages investments in low-carbon, energy-efficient heating systems, to reduce carbon emissions. Through the scheme, eligible participants can access financial support to upgrade their boilers.
Started in May 2022, the scheme provides a grant of £5000 towards the purchase of an air source heat pump or £6000 towards a ground source heat pump or biomass boiler. With the extension, individuals can continue to benefit from this funding opportunity until 2028.
Energy Secretary Grant Shapps also introduced The Great British Insulation Scheme, aimed at increasing insulation in homes with lower energy efficiency ratings in Council Tax bands A to D.
A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says: “We recognise that industry would like to have more certainty on future funding for heat pumps post-2025. The recent review into Net Zero also recommended that the BUS should be extended. Therefore, the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero is announcing that we intend to extend the scheme until 2028.”
There is also an investment in green hydrogen production; as of 2022, the UK government has allocated approximately £500 million in funding to support hydrogen projects. The aim is to accelerate the development of hydrogen technologies and infrastructure across the country.
Benefits of upgrading your boiler
Upgrading an old boiler through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) offers numerous benefits for homeowners.
Firstly, it significantly reduces carbon emissions, contributing to environmental sustainability and helping combat climate change. By investing in low-carbon, energy-efficient heating systems, participants not only minimise their carbon footprint but also play a crucial role in the transition to cleaner energy sources.
Additionally, upgrading usually leads to lower utility bills and long-term cost savings. The BUS provides financial support in the form of grants, making it more affordable for individuals to invest in these energy-efficient solutions.
