Spotlight on EngTech: Sean Sanders
On our mission to tell our member’s stories, we spoke to Sean Sanders, Gas Technical Operations Manager at EDF Energy and IGEM EngTech member.
One of Sean’s standout moments of his career was producing an article for Gas International, collaborating with SVI, to discuss the transformative power of advanced analytics in the gas industry.
Staying ahead of the curve is something Sean has always strived for throughout his career, leaning on IGEM to provide him with the latest advancements in the gas world.
Noting just a few reasons he joined IGEM, he said: “I wanted to continue with my own professional development, connect with like-minded professionals and stay updated with the latest industry standards and technologies.
“IGEM's reputation for promoting excellence in the gas industry and providing valuable resources for professional development was a significant motivation for me.”
Starting his career as a young apprentice at British Gas, Sean then moved up through the ranks to work in the Smart Metering department, gaining hands-on experience in gas installations and maintenance.
As the years progressed, he advanced through various roles including working as a Gas Technical Engineer and now working at EDF Energy as a Gas Technical Operations Manager.
In his current role, Sean oversees technical compliance, implements safety standards and provides technical support across the board.
Personal and professional development has always been important for Sean and IGEM has played a key part in it. He said: “The continuous professional development programmes at IGEM have helped me stay current with industry trends and advancements.
“Moving forward, I hope to leverage IGEM's platform to engage in more collaborative projects and contribute to the development of innovative solutions in the gas industry.”
Being an EngTech member of IGEM is something that Sean is particularly proud of as it recognises the practical skills and technical expertise, he has spent years advancing.
He also shares that new opportunities have been offered to him as well as clear pathway for career advancement because of his EngTech status.
For anyone wanting to work towards achieving an Engineering Technician status, Sean suggests a heavy focus on gaining practical experience and continuously improving technical skills.
He also said: “Pursue the relevant certifications, engage in professional development opportunities, and seek mentorship from experienced professionals. Being proactive and staying updated with industry advancements will also help in achieving this designation.”
Looking toward the future, Sean believes that in the transition to sustainable energy sources, gas will still have its role to play.
He said: “While natural gas will remain a critical energy source in the near term, there is a growing emphasis on integrating renewable gases like hydrogen and biomethane.
“Innovations in technology and infrastructure will be essential to support this transition and ensure a reliable and efficient energy supply.”
With new developments on the horizon, there will be a new wave of engineers tasked with finding innovative ways of tackling sustainability.
Sean recommends that upcoming engineers should gain a solid foundation through education and get some hands-on experience. “Be open to learning and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
“Networking with industry professionals and joining professional bodies like IGEM can provide valuable insights and career development opportunities. Always prioritise safety and strive for excellence in all aspects of your work,” he says.
