Labour affirms commitment to net zero targets amidst economic challenges

Stephen Morgan, Parliamentary Under-secretary for Education, has reiterated Labour’s commitment to the UK’s net zero targets, addressing concerns about the recent Vauxhall factory closure in Luton.

Morgan has emphasised the Government's focus on fulfilling its election pledges to tackle climate change, stating: "We want to bring certainty and clarity to the industry while ensuring we deliver on our manifesto commitments to move towards a greener future."

The UK remains on track to achieve its ambitious net zero target by 2050, a commitment supported by interim goals such as a 68% reduction in emissions by 2030, aligned with the Paris Agreement. Scotland is aiming for an even earlier deadline, targeting 2045 for net zero.

Labour has advanced a range of legislative initiatives to underpin these efforts, aiming to solidify the nation’s transition to a sustainable economy while addressing the challenges posed by recent industrial shifts.
