IGEM participates in hydrogen storage safety initiative

IGEM is proud to participate in the newly launched Hydrogen Salt Cavern Storage Fire & Explosion Joint Industry Project led by DNV. This initiative brings together key industry stakeholders to develop best practices for the safe storage of hydrogen in salt caverns, addressing fire and explosion risks.
With hydrogen storage playing a critical role in the transition to net zero, ensuring robust safety standards is essential. The project will assess the applicability of existing natural gas storage guidelines to hydrogen, identifying key challenges, risk mitigation methods, and regulatory compliance.
A collaborative effort
The project has already gathered input from multiple stakeholders. Additionally, IGEM, along with relevant regulatory and governmental bodies, has joined as an observer, ensuring independent expertise guides the project.
Shaping the future of hydrogen storage
The project is set to formally launch in May 2025, following the completion of commercial agreements. The goal is to develop a safety guideline that enhances industry confidence, informs regulatory frameworks, and supports future hydrogen storage investments.
Get involved
For those interested in shaping the future of hydrogen storage safety, there is still time to join the project. To learn more or request a commercial proposal, contact Ali.Bahtui@dnv.com.
