Biomethane added to NI gas supply network for first time

Northern Ireland's gas supply network has made a significant stride towards sustainability with the successful introduction of biomethane.

This eco-friendly gas product can be used as a direct substitute for conventional natural gas and is derived from sources such as agricultural manure, chicken litter, silage, and food waste.

The initial biomethane supply in Northern Ireland will be sourced from food waste, with plans to meet a significant portion of the region's gas demand with biomethane by 2030.

This move is particularly crucial as agriculture is the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions in Northern Ireland, primarily due to livestock.
