Beyond Fossil Fuels: Amazon's Green Hydrogen Investment in Logistics
In a groundbreaking move towards a more sustainable future, Amazon has entered an agreement with Plug Power to usher in the era of green hydrogen. The deal is poised to transform Amazon's operations, decarbonising its logistics and buildings.
Starting in 2025, 10,950 tons of green hydrogen will be produced annually to fuel its 30,000 forklifts, 800 heavy-duty trucks and building operations. The fuel will replace the current grey hydrogen, which is produced from methane gas, whereas green hydrogen is produced from electrolyzing water with renewable electricity.
Plug power is a global leader in comprehensive hydrogen solutions, and has provided Amazon with a one-megawatt (MW) proton exchange membrane electrolyzer to produce low-carbon hydrogen onsite.
Plug Power has collaborated with Amazon to deploy more than 17,000 fuel cells to replace batteries in forklifts in more than 80 fulfilment centres in North America to date.
Amazon is proud to be an early adopter of green hydrogen given its potential to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors like long-haul trucking, steel manufacturing, aviation, and ocean shipping
Amazon's ambitious green hydrogen initiative is not just another corporate strategy; it's a commitment to urgent climate action. Amazon has committed to net zero by 2040, which is 10 years quicker than the Paris agreement. As one of the largest and most influential e-commerce and technology companies in the world, they are setting an example of how hydrogen can be implemented across the globe to achieve net zero and phase out fossil fuels.
