2022 IGEM Scholarship recipients announced
IGEM’s Scholarships, Grants and Awards scheme is designed to support the next generation of gas engineers and managers on their educational journey and beyond. It aims to inspire innovation and personal development by recognising and rewarding achievements wherever we can. Today, we’re pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s scholarships.
Sam Storey
Sam currently works within the Engineering Training Programme at Cadent. After studying Mechanical Engineering at HNC level, Sam will be studying Mechanical Engineering, which he believes will support his technical knowledge and understanding on project work, along with developing skills such as problem solving and critical thinking. These are both crucial to the NRO/Permitry Competent Person role he is currently being trained for.
On receiving the IGEM Undergraduate Scholarship, Sam said: “The scholarship will allow me to move towards becoming a Chartered Engineer without accumulating debt and purchase additional study material to achieve the best result possible.”
Shafi Maahe
Shafi will be studying Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London, having chosen this course because of his fascination with the “specialised, yet still versatile nature of the degree. ”This will allow him to appreciate the “true, broader interdisciplinary promise of engineering.”
Talking about how the IGEM Scholarship will aid his studies, Shafi says: “Besides the significant financial support, which will allow me to cover my expenses with little to no part-time work, this scholarship will be monumental in helping me pave the path towards a successful engineering career through the prominent IGEM network, and the essence of this scholarship: a truly proud achievement and inspiration that will remain with me forever.”
Sophia Robinson
Sophia is the third of our scholarship recipients. A current undergraduate student, Sophia will be studying MEng Chemical Engineering – having chosen this course because the first year will cover general engineering, providing “a good, broad base and an understanding of other engineering disciplines in industry,” and the university also has a good focus on employability and sustainability.
On receiving the IGEM Scholarship, Sophia says: “Access to IGEM’s resources will give a more in-depth insight into a key area of the energy sector and contacts that will help me progress my studies and future career.”
We’d like to wish our scholarship recipients good luck for the upcoming academic year, and best wishes for their future careers. If you’re interested in applying for the IGEM Scholarships scheme, applications will re-open in March next year – more information can be found here.
