Technical Director - Ground and Water, WSP
Prof Russell Thomas is a Technical Director in the International engineering and professional services firm WSP. His career path has been an unusual one, which has focussed on how science and engineering has evolved, affecting the society we live in and the natural world around us, and how we can address this. One common theme throughout his career has been gas. After completing a PhD in Nuclear Waste treatment in 1997, Russell worked at the Gas Research centre in Loughborough, researching sustainable ways to address the environmental legacy of the gas industry.
Moving into Engineering Consultancy in 2001, Russell continued research into various aspect of the gas industries legacy, and from this an interest in the history of the gas industry grew and an invitation to join the Institution of Gas Engineers and Manager History Panel followed. One thing has led to another, and Russell is now Chair of the Panel and Co-editor of its publication Historic Gas Times. His in-depth knowledge of the gas industry has led to him writing Historic England’s research report on The Manufactured Gas Industry.
Currently Russell is studying what lessons can be learned from the energy transitions which occurred in the gas industry from the end of World War II to the conversion to natural gas which concluded in the late 1970s.
