In 2023, BSI published a revised version of British Standard 5440. The new standard came into effect on 31 December 2023 and supersedes the previous edition

Recent updates have been made to several definitions, including those for communal flues and lightwells. Throughout the standard, the terms for windows, vents, and other access points into a building are now collectively referred to as openings. It is specified that weep vents do not qualify as openings into a building.

Additionally, there has been a focus on eliminating outdated information that is no longer applicable. For instance, much of the guidance concerning the construction of SE ducts and U ducts has been removed from the document; however, maintenance guidance remains in place to accommodate appliances still connected to these chimney or flue systems.
