Scottish Section

IGEM has a network of Sections that enhances membership by offering a local perspective and enabling involvement with issues in and around the gas industry. The Sections are run by volunteers who organise a range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events and networking opportunities.

Each Section has its own Chair and Secretary to deal with any queries you may have within your area.

David McLeod, Scottish Section Chair

Scottish Section David McLeod Website

David is a Chartered Engineer with IGEM and has a MSc with Distinction in Gas Engineering and Management from the University of Salford and a first class degree in Construction (Project) Management from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh.

In 2009 he joined SGN as a graduate management trainee and over the years has been fortunate enough to experience a variety of different roles across the business. His current role as Engineering Manager gives him responsibility for the management, delivery and outperformance of repair and replacement operations in Edinburgh.

"I have been an active member of IGEM since joining the gas industry and have reaped the benefits of my professional development. This new IGEM role follows on nicely from a successful time as the Young Persons Network (YPN) Chair for the UK.

"My key objectives are to develop the Scottish Section Committee, organise high profile Section events and continue to form relationships and links with other professional organisations and academia."

 

Graham Loan, Scottish Section Treasurer

Graham Loan started in the gas industry with Transco as an apprentice in 2001.  After completing his apprenticeship, he worked as First Call Operative in various locations across Scotland for 10 years before being promoted to the role of Team Manager.

He has held positions as Business Performance Manager, driving efficiencies in operational depots; Project Manager on a business transformation programme and, more recently, Engineering Manager for the Glasgow area.  He is currently part of a project team and using his operational experience to help shape SGN's business plan for the RIIO-GD2 submission.

Graham has been a Scottish Section committee member since 2014 and has held the role of Treasurer since 2015.

 

Ross Armstrong, Committee Member

Ross Armstrong has been employed by SGN as the Transmission Training Manager since 2015 and has over 35 years' experience specialising in MAH assets. He started full time work in the gas industry in 1983 after two summers working in the industry in Dundee and Aberdeen.

He has worked as a Graduate Trainee, in Major Project Construction and managed Maintenance of Pipelines and Pressure Control Assets. He has also held management positions in Asset Management, Safety Heath & Environment and more recently 10 years in Engineering Policy managing Transmission and Major Accident Hazard MAH documents.

Ross has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and graduated in 1983 from Dundee College of Technology and he also has a HND in Plant Engineering. He became a Chartered Engineer with IGEM in 1987 and is an associate member of IMechE.

During his time volunteering on the Scottish Section committee Ross has held the roles of Section Chair and Secretary. He is also an active IGEM and SGN mentor and interviewer.

 

Ben Clarke, Committee Member

Ben is a Chartered member of IGEM and has served on the Scottish Committee for over 12 years. He was initially asked to join the local committee off the back of the YPPC, in which he had represented Scotland in 2005, and accepted the offer as a way meet more people within the industry.

Ben found volunteering to be challenging yet very rewarding as he not only learned new skills but met new people who were to have a major impact on his career path. This background also helped when Ben applied for Chartered Membership. Ben leads the Edinburgh office for PM PROjEN, an independent engineering consultancy, which carries out services ranging from design through to EPCM in a number of different industries including manufacturing, pharmaceutical and utility.

 

John McLuskey, Committee Member

John McLuskey is currently employed as Head of Pipelines for Energy Assets Pipelines, a new Independent Gas Transporter (IGT). John has developed the IGT business from initial concept to what is now, a fully functioning gas transporter, adopting gas networks in the new housing and commercial sectors.

John has 27 years' experience in the Gas Industry starting with British Gas in 1991 as a Distribution Craftsman Apprentice and he has worked in various operational, commercial and management positions with British Gas, Transco, Fulcrum and Energy Assets.During his career, John has project managed many innovative and challenging infrastructure projects, most notably the prestigious 26km IP "Speyside Gas Line" supplying four well known Scottish distilleries.

He has also gained experience in several industry sectors and has recognized qualifications in gas distribution, metering and utilization pipework.

John became a Scottish Section committee member following a presentation he delivered at the Section AGM in 2017.
