North East & Yorkshire Section

IGEM has a network of Sections that enhances membership by offering a local perspective and enabling involvement with issues in and around the gas industry. The Sections are run by volunteers who organise a range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events and networking opportunities.

Each Section has its own Chair and Secretary to deal with any queries you may have within your area.

The Section Committee Officers

Chris Hogg, North East & Yorkshire Section Chair

Chris Hogg v2

Chris spent his early career with the Royal Marines, followed by operations management roles in Southern and Eastern Africa. Returning to the UK, he furthered his operational experience before joining Northern Gas Networks (NGN) as a network planner. He has since gone on to manage the network planning team and is now NGNs supply assurance lead, working on long term strategy and projects ranging from biomethane to HS2. He also has a keen interest in the future role of gas in the energy mix and has been part of a number of projects on the subject.

He aims to build on the work the North East & Yorkshire Section has done in recruiting new members over previous years and provide a broad range of events for members to participate in. With the region known for its engineering heritage, a number of visits are planned to engineering companies outside of the gas industry, with an eye on promoting best practice within the industry as a whole.

Ben Smith, North East & Yorkshire Section Vice Chair

Ben has worked as a consultant engineer in the gas industry for five years,  working on and managing projects including IGEM/TD/1 audits for high pressure pipelines, Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) Competent Person role to the UK gas networks, commissioning of the Bellanaboy Bridge Gas Terminal in Ireland, and biomethane gas safety audits, to name a few.  He is now a senior engineer working for ROSEN in the UK Onshore team.  Ben is fortunate to work in a dynamic team which provides a wide range of services to the UK gas industry including integrity management, materials, corrosion, welding, assurance, and supporting qualification of innovation projects including full scale testing and field trials.

Ben's main objective within IGEM is to support the North East & Yorkshire Section Chair by continuing to grow the membership and engage with members through CPD events that reflect the evolving gas industry and challenges that are faced.  He has been a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador for seven years in the North East and is passionate about providing opportunities for young people to learn about engineering and explore the potential career options.  Ben believes that IGEM and its members can play an integral part in helping to open doors for young people through in-school activities and local STEM competitions.  Ben looks forward to meeting you at events, both in the North East and nationally.

Sara Lambelle-Wilson, North East & Yorkshire Section Secretary

Sara has been with NGN for just over two years, working as part of the Asset Strategy Team under the Asset Risk Management Directorate. Her role includes reporting NGN's output performance against the targets set out in the RIIO-GD1 price control, as well as providing support and assurance to the business with regulatory submissions to Ofgem.

Previously, Sara has worked as a Medical Photographer, Interior Designer and spent 14 years as a Resource Planner & MI Analyst, where she was responsible for the end to end planning, forecasting, budget and project management of assigned work streams. She is in a privileged position as her job means she is involved in every area of the business, which is invaluable as she is new to the energy sector.

Sara hopes to promote membership, in particular people from a non-engineering background. She is also keen to raise the profile around the management of assets (now and in the future) and share best practice.

Peter Christie, North East & Yorkshire Section Treasurer

Peter has forty plus years' experience working in the gas industry within the North East & Yorkshire LDZs. He has been fortunate in working across the full pressure range with operational and project management roles within maintenance, mains replacement and construction, as well as health, safety and environment and quality assurance. This has involved being hands on through to senior management roles.

Peter has always had a keen interest in engineering and has been involved with the Institution for around thirty years, attending many technical meetings and social events. Through his position as Treasurer, he is looking to help support new and existing members in developing their skills, experience and ensuring their continued membership.  Peter hopes this will include increased involvement in IGEM Technical Panels.
